Create a pocket for your journal

As convenient as my digital diary is, there’s something about my paper diary that makes everything in it feel more real. I find it easier to remember things that are in my paper diary and writing entries on paper with a pen feels a lot more firm.

Starting a new diary is a quiet ritual I have come to cherish during the strange few days between Christmas and New Year. I allow myself space and time to sit down with a hot, soothing drink and my new diary, its pristine pages prompting me to think of all the possibilities, hopes and dreams for the year ahead.

A diary or journal is improved a pocket for loose bits of paper

Buying a new diary is delightful for a stationery nerd like me. I need to have things laid out in a specific way and I don't want my diary to be too large or too small, so finding a diary that fulfils all my criteria AND also has a pocket for slips of paper, receipts and notes can be tricky. That is why I make my own journal pockets.

Of course you could simply stick in an envelope, but what would be the fun in that? Making your own means you can adjust the size to your diary and be creative with your choice of paper.

There are so many different types of journal pockets - pockets with accordion folds for extra room, envelope pockets that open all the way up, sliding pockets or pockets with a paper button and string for fastening.

This year, I am going with a simple envelope pocket. It can hold any loose bits of paper easily and they are just as easy to get out again. Plus it’s got a cute heart fastening that delights me every time I use it.
