What is a scrunchie?

A scrunchie is a hairband that is made of a rectangular strip of fabric that is sewn into a tube into which a rubber band is inserted. The rubber band is smaller than the fabric tube, which causes the fabric to ruffle.

Some of the many advantages of scrunchies

Scrunchies have had quite a comeback after being firmly out of fashion since their heyday in the 1990s. Their popularity is not surprising because they don’t damage our hair or give it kinks, and they can be used for styling - they are available in all varieties of fabric, colours and sizes, so that there is a scrunchie to suit any taste.

They tick several boxes in the world of creativity too:

  • You can make scrunchies with very little fabric and they are ideal for upcycling old garments

  • They are a simple sewing project for absolute beginners, allowing sewers to create something with minimal effort and time and feel a sense of accomplishment

  • They make a lovely handmade gift

  • Making them can be a fun activity for you to do with children!

How to make a scrunchie

The ideal fabric size is about 60cm by 15cm with an elastic band of about 15cm.

There are two key ways to make a scrunchie:

You either start by stitching together the long edges of the fabric strip, or the short edges. The first version is the more obvious way to make scrunchie, and it is the one I recommend for children and beginners.
